Hello Friends, I just wanted to drop a note to folks in this NG about a member who is one of the unsung heros of the video trading world. Phil, is one of the people who way back in the very early days of the internet, got the ball on video trading rolling. He and a few friends established the now chaotic Alt.video.tape-trading newsgroup on usenet. It should now be known as Alt.Video.Tape-trading.flame flame.flame.bicker.bicker.bicker. :) Enough about that. Phil and his friends were the core group who helped start and get the video trading newsgroups onto usenet and wrote the now famous AVTT FAQ. I dont know if I ever thanked Phil for his contribution but I wish to do so now. Thank you Phil. He is a great guy, valuable resource, fun to chat with and great to trade with. Have no hesitation, he comes with my highest recommendation. Phil, thanks again. This was long overdue but most deserved.
Dave.
PS. sorry if i mispelled your last name in avtt.

Blushing;-)

I want to second what Dave has said. Phil is a real
asset to the trading community (and a stand up guy to boot!).

THE FAME (Literally)

One of my pet peeves is finding out when a performer has appeared on a show or video and wasn't able to even get a copy of their performance! So I try and remedy the situation as much as possible and I become (as a certain keyboardist for Yes put it) "The Rock-N-Roll Robin Hood" :-)

This came from Marty Jourard, the keyboard and Sax player from the 80's band THE MOTELS:-)

Phil,
The tape is great! I've only watched the first fifteen minutes of the Catamaran video, when my brother was in the band. It is fucking awesome. I couldn't be more jazzed. No way would I have seen this if you hadn't found it. I thank you from the bottom of my Motels heart. I told Martha about it today, and unless she has to rehearse Saturday, she'll come over and watch some of it tomorrow. We will autograph something Motel-like for you.
Take care, marty

YES!!!!!! I'd love to have copies, you're too sweet to offer. On DVD or VHS is fine, either way. I'd be interested in hearing as well as seeing the Rockpalast recording. I appreciate you contacting me.

THE SHAME
(The Hate Mail Bag)

Once in a while you encounter someone who is just NUTS! I've never really had a trade go bad (or at least I wasn't able to fix) but all of us traders at one time or another received letters or e-mails or even (dare I say) meet some people who have absolutely NO people skills or just can't grasp a simple concept. I've included a couple of such jems I call THE HATE MAIL BAG!

THE SIMPLE

I have NO idea what she was talking about!

Now, I'm always willing to cooperate if people have certain preferences, but this one was just a minefield!

Funny thing is the above trade was for ONE disc! Of course I politely told him I can not find "Cloth lined" sleeves to I called the trade off. In other words his e-mail was rejected upon receipt;-)

THE CLUELESS

This was from a person who wrote back after I told them I couldn't trade with them because I couldn't find anything of interest from his 2 paragraph list of commercially released discs.

Phil,

Gimme a break!! There were TONS of things on my list you don't have. I've been collecting for over 6 month and have built up quite the treasure trove of classic TV and you can honestly tell me you could not find ONE THING of interest?!?!?! I have plenty of new arrivals coming in the next few weeks. I'll be getting in Friends 9th Season, Striperella Season 1 and The Twilight Zone Season 2. But if you want to be a hard ass that's fine by me!

Oh really? Well if you want to be a serious collector, then it takes more than 6 months, a membership at your local downtown Blockbuster and a copy of DVD XCOPY!

(Oh) THE IRONY?????

This one came from a member of the "With Original Commercials" E-mail list where I posted my list of shows with original network commercials.

Hi there,
Saw your list on the Original Commercials group and wanted to know if you'd be interested in trading? My main focus is shows from the 60's-80's

Fair enough. He attached his list and we did a trade, he didn't have anything with original commercials, but he did have a few things I needed. In return he wanted some episodes of THE INVADERS, GILLIGAN'S ISLAND and an original STAR TREK which I had all with original network commercials from the 60's.

Easy enough right?.......

WRONG! About a week later I got this:

Hi Phil,
Got the discs, thank you for sending them out so quickly, it was great to see the invaders again. However, the episodes all have the commercials in them. Although I do appreciate the historical novelty of them, they really destract from the show. Would it be at all possible to get another set with the commercials edited out?

Okay, if anyone needs me I'll be at the bar!

Hello,
I saw your list but I'm looking for something maybe you might have. My grandfather was featured on a national variety show that featured national acts as well as local performers. His name was Bill Parkin and he was a singer. I don't know the name of the show but the host was a famous comedian who always had a funny voice and was always in shows like that.

Yea, it was called "THAT SHOW WITH THAT FUNNY-VOICED HOST WHO WAS ALWAYS IN SHOWS LIKE THIS ONE WITH LOCAL SINGERS NAMED BILL PARKIN" I swear that's it and of course I have it!"

Recently in a 30 minute only broadcast of CBS Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Show from 1976 w/o/c (taped off air on beta August 21, 1976) one of the original commercials was for Post Honey Comb cereal where the Honey Comb Hideout goes back in time via storm hurricane and ends up in Prehistoric times and meets up with a BIG CAVEMAN. I don't know if that BIG CAVEMAN is played by either one of the male adults from the 1974-1975 Hanna-Barbera produced series "Korg: 70,000 B.C." - Jim Malanda (Korg) or Bill Ewing (Bok) in that Honey Comb TV commercial.

Uh, okay, thanks for letting me know you don't know this! Recently in a show taped in 1976?!?!?!

Apparently you don't grasp the concept of video trading or exchanging. To me this is a hobby which I invest a TON of time and money which unfortunatlely I'm not rolling in money so I can not send tapes to people who just want them. I'd suggest going to one of the newsgroups or trading boards and make your request. However I don't think many people would be willing to help you out if you are offering nothing in return!
Good luck!
